Follow Me – Week 4: God’s Will For Your Life

What is God’s will for my life?

If you are in middle school or high school, this may not be a question that you’ve asked.  But, as you continue to walk with Jesus and as you encounter new seasons in your life, this is a question that you may revisit many times over.

As you get older, you’ll probably wonder what God has in mind for you with respect to dating, marriage, college, work, kids, etc.  And as you come to make these decisions there’s a good chance you’ll ask, What does God want me to do?

In teaching on God’s will as part of his Follow Me curriculum, David Platt brings up 2 important points:

  1. There is something more important than “merely” seeking God’s will for your life: knowing and trusting God.

[God’s] ultimate concern is that you and I would know him more deeply as we trust him more completely. …So we go to him.  We spend time with him.  We sincerely listen to his Word as we walk in obedience to it.  As we do these things, God leads and guides us according to his will, and suddenly we realize that the will of God is not a road map just waiting to be unearthed somewhere.  Instead it’s a relationship that God wants us to experience every day. …The goal of the disciple of Jesus, then, is not to answer the question, ‘What is God’s will for my life?’  The goal, instead, is to walk in God’s will on a moment-by-moment, day-by-day basis.1

2.  God’s will has already been revealed.

The way many go about seeking God’s will in their lives makes it seem like God is, for some reason, hiding His will from them.  Platt argues that this is not the case at all.  In fact, God wants us to know His will and has revealed it to us in the Bible.

If that’s the case, then what is God’s will?

  1. …to redeem men and women from every nation, tribe, language, and people by his grace and for his glory.
  2. …to be worshiped.
  3. …to create, call, save, and bless his people for the spread of his grace and glory among all peoples.
  4. …for every disciple of Jesus to make disciples of Jesus.2
